At this point have not become news until the evening of Monday, 1 August 2000, when Monguito was reunited with Johnny Pacheco at SOB's, in a magical night of wasted Latin-salsa music. This was the first time in more than thirty years that these two giants of the music performed together again. Mr. Nando Alvericci, SOB's promoter, was the man capable of achieving this stellar event. Pacheco was responsible for opening the night with their vocalist at that time, Casanova, who played the classic songs accompanied by a band led by Pacheco. After Pacheco was who introduced Monguito, which appeared as usual in recent years, dressed in all white, to put the environment at a maximum temperature. It was a throwback to the late 60's.

Again there is silence in the life of Monguito until according to information received by the director and TV host Willie Villegas: when Monguito was placed in a hospital in Mexico because of a blackout, it was discovered a tumor in his brain. Returning to his home in New York, also suffered a mild heart attack. According to reports his health deteriorated rapidly and died on Friday May 26, 2006. His funeral was attended only by a discreet few relatives and no one in the media was present.

For several years, the musical star, a true sonero, like Monguito, has excelled in the musical environment in the Caribbean, sonera fame won him four gold records, a Golden Owl and many awards and decorations, all thanks to his exceptional gift voice still resonates in the Caribbean city. Let us enjoy his musical legacy, sure that his voice will live on in the hearts of music lovers of Afro-Latin music and hopefully the news is just a rumor.
