During the Cold War, aboard the Bedford (American warship made a routine patrol of NATO) which, besides the travel crew and a journalist former Nazi officer of the navy who now works for NATO, the captain decides to follow a Russian submarine to test their men. Eric Finlander (Richard Widmark), captain of the ship, is a neurotic who takes his crew on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Ben Munceford (Sydney Poitier) is a photojournalist who is on board to cover what would be a mission "routine." But his growing indignation increases when master checks the obsession to try to remove the Russian submarine to the surface.
